Some background info about the Buck Danny series:
- The late drawer Victor Hubinon never got paid by Publisher Dupuis for the 38 Buck Danny album covers (Joseph Gillain aka Jijè drew cover #1, Eddy Paape cover #6). Therefore Hubinon's successor Francis Bergèse (74) who first drew the 16 covers of the Buck Danny bundle series "Tout Buck Danny", draw up a contract with Publisher Dupuis. When Bergèse then was asked the draw Buck Danny stories also, he adopted that cover contract also in the new contract.
- In 2008 Francis Bergèse retired with drawing the Buck Danny series. Because of the more and more complex political situatations and the fast developpement of technology. About 20 years ago Bergèse proposed to start a Buck Danny spin-off series: "La jeunesse de Buck Danny/ The young years of Buck Danny", like the
Blueberry spin-off. With Buck Danny stories in the 40s and 50s, but at that time Publisher Dupuis refused his proposal. Bergèse had already draw a story ("The Coward") with Buck Danny again stationed on the Yorktown (CV-5), a story between album #1 and album #2. A summary of this story was in June 2015 published in
this special edition of bundle "Tout Buck Danny " #13.
In 2012 however, Alexandre Parengaux, CEO of Publisher Zéphyr - Paris, adopted the idea of Bergèse yet and started in 2013 the Buck Danny spin-off series "Buck Danny Classic" with stories in the 40s, 50s and early 60s. Bergèse supports the drawer of this spin-off: Jean-Michel Arroyo.
- The unfinished Buck Danny story by the late Jean Michel Charlier
"The Black Birds" from 1988 (see bundle
"Tout Buck Danny "14) will perhaps be finished. Publisher Dupuis has asked Bergèse to finish this story. Bergèse has agreed to draw, but is looking now for a scenarist on the level of Charlier. Charlier intended a dyptich with this story. As In 2017 there is an anniversary: 1947 -2017: 70 years Buck Danny. Maybe "The Black Birds" will in 2016/2017 be Buck Danny #55 or a special edition.
- The
Thomson M1A1 was Victor Hubinon's favourite gun to draw during his "Buck Danny era", with
the Colt M1911 pistole. However, the Tompson was seldom used after the Korean War. The Thomson appeared for the first time in Buck Danny album "3 and for the last time in Buck Danny album #39. Weird: in both occasions Jerry Tumbler was the owner. The Thompson is even on the cover of Buck Danny #3, #4 and #6. The Thompson gun appeared in many Buck Danny albums, neven modern/up-to date weapons like Francis Bergèse did.
- In the early 50s Victor Hubinon coloured his drawings (made with China-ink) with aquarel:
page J.212 from album #4.
- The early fans of the Buck Danny series had to wait for Buck Danny #15 to have a sign of the first name of Jerry Tumbler: a "J" op the back of his flight-jacket:
page 3 (NC03). Jerry Tumbler's full name apeared for the first time in 1969 in a Buck Danny parady drawing by Hubinon, published in the Spirou weekly magazine: "It was '38".
